The International Chess Federation awarded the Armenian men’s team the title of “Team of the Century”. The awards were presented during an event held in the evening of the 8th round of the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest.

The Chess Gala, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the International Chess Federation, celebrated the exceptional achievements and contributions of individuals, groups and organizations to the chess community. Over the past century, chess has evolved and flourished, and this evening was dedicated to honoring those who have had an extraordinary impact on the game.

After the playing of the FIDE anthem, the President and Vice-President of FIDE, Arkady Dvorkovich and Mahir Mammedov, respectively, welcomed the participants of the gala.

“The first century of FIDE’s existence was full of extraordinary events, great personalities and unforgettable matches. For this we must thank the founders of FIDE!” said Mammedov.

While Team USSR would be the undefeated leader in both the men’s and women’s categories based on the number of Olympic medals, the Jury decided to choose a current country. Armenia has outdone the others, winning three times, and China has won two gold medals in the last ten years.

The award was received by the executive director of the Armenian Chess Federation, Armen Gevorgyan.
