Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday said that to make the state’s economy worth $1.5 trillion by 2047, focus needs to be placed on eight strategic areas, he added, adding that Thane has to play a major role in achieving this goal.

Addressing the MMR Thane Development Conference 2024, Shinde said his government is working towards making the Mumbai metropolitan region’s economy touch $300 billion by 2030. These eight strategic areas have been suggested by NITI Aayog and a mechanism including monthly reviews, dedicated war rooms etc. is in place to achieve them, he added.

The areas include AI and robotics, global capacity centres and data centres etc. The CM said projects like Atal Setu, coastal road and eastern expressway will improve regional connectivity and boost the economy of the region, especially Thane. He said various tests and trials at the Navi Mumbai International Airport will begin by September-end, while plans are underway to provide air connectivity to Palghar and set up a mega airport at Vadhvan near Dahanu.

Maharashtra accounted for 52 per cent of the foreign direct investment (FDI) the country received in the first quarter of 2024-25, while memoranda of understanding worth Rs 5.8 trillion were signed for semiconductors and other high-tech sectors, including electric vehicle manufacturing, the CM said. He said all efforts should be made to ensure that Thane’s economy reaches $150 billion by 2030 and assured the stakeholders of his government’s full support.
