Southampton vs Ipswich Town: Premier League – BBC Sport

  • Southampton lost 1-0 at home to Ipswich in the Championship last season but have not lost a league match at home to the Tractor Boys since April 1980.

  • Ipswich have won more Premier League matches against Southampton than any other opponent (5). However, they lost the last such meeting between the sides 3-1 at Portman Road in March 2002.

  • This is the last meeting between the two teams promoted to the Premier League, with neither having recorded a win since Fulham beat West Bromwich Albion in the seventh round of the 2020-21 campaign; only one of the six meetings between the sides last season ended in a home victory (Burnley 5-0 Sheffield United).

  • Southampton are one of only two teams to have not led for a single minute in the Premier League this season, alongside Crystal Palace. Saints have also spent more time behind than anyone else in 2024-25 (208 minutes and 15 seconds, including injury time).

  • Ipswich Town have failed to win any of their opening four Premier League matches this season (D2 L2), the longest winless run for the Tractor Boys in a top-flight campaign since 1984-85 (opening five matches).

  • Southampton have lost their opening four league games of a season for the first time since 2012-13 under Nigel Adkins. The only other time Saints have suffered five defeats at the start of a campaign was in the 1998-99 Premier League, when they survived relegation.

  • Ipswich have had just nine shots in the first halves of four Premier League matches this season, the fewest of any team. Away from home, the Tractor Boys have had one first-half shot in two matches – Sam Szmodics’ goal against Man City in August.

  • Russell Martin has lost each of his first four Premier League matches as Southampton manager this season. The last manager to lose his first five matches was Scott Parker in April 2019, while no manager in Premier League history has ever lost his first five matches when in charge of the first five matches of the season.

  • Ipswich midfielder Sam Morsy has been booked in three of his four Premier League appearances this season. Only four players have received four yellow cards in their first five games in the competition: Edgar Davids in 2005 (4), James Perch in 2010 (5), Fabian Schär in 2018 (4) and Nicolas Jackson in 2023 (4).

  • Ben Brereton has made 18 Premier League appearances at various times with Sheffield United and current side Southampton and is yet to finish a season on a winning side (D4 L14), which is a Premier League record for the most games played without a win. He has lost his last 11 games in which he has featured, the longest unbeaten run since Juninho Bacuna lost 14 in a row against Huddersfield in 2018-19.
