TxDOT wants to hand over toll management and customer service to TxTag

The Texas Department of Transportation intends to transfer toll transaction processing and TxTag customer accounts to the Harris County Toll Road Authority by the end of the year.

TxDOT recommends TxTag customers update their address, vehicle information, and credit card information to avoid potential issues. It also advises customers to pay any outstanding bills as soon as possible.

TxDOT currently has a $185 million contract with TTEC Government Solutions to provide services to customers. That contract expires on November 14.

If the transition goes through, current TxTag customers will continue to be able to use their stickers and will not need to apply for an EZ TAG from the Harris County Toll Road Authority.

But drivers won’t be required to use either TxTAG or EZ Pass HCTRA. As the CTRMA website explains, toll transponders can be used in a variety of areas, including North Texas, Kansas and Florida.

After the transition, customers will manage their accounts through the HCTRA website. Customers will still be able to use any TxTag location in the Austin area for in-person services.

Although HCTRA would collect tolls, TxDOT would still be responsible for maintaining the toll roads, including SH 130, SH 45N, SH 45SE and MoPac.

TxDOT said it expects the transition to happen in phases, starting later this year, but could stop the process at any time. It said it will keep customers updated.
