There was a clear emphasis on the Canucks getting bigger and more physical with additions like Jake DeBrusk and Kiefer Sherwood.

“I just think, in Kiefer specifically, he’s a really good player. (We) played against him in the playoffs last year, and you got to know when he’s on the ice,” Hughes said. “I think he’s got more game than people give him credit for. I’m not the coach, but I think he can play anywhere in the lineup, and I think it’s just a great addition. We had a bunch of great additions, and I think we’re a better team this year than we were last year.”

The team identity underwent a minor surgery with other additions, and Hughes agreed with teammate Brock Boeser that each player would play an important role in building a winning culture.

“It’s really important if we’re going to try to be one of the top echelon teams,” Hughes said. “You have to not only be a great team on the ice but you (have to have) that culture off the ice and special group of people too.”

Hughes has noticed that the standard of practice is rising. He attributes this to many core maturing and understanding of what it takes to win in the NHL.

“I don’t know; part of that might be maturity and just getting older and paying attention to the details a little bit more and focusing,” Hughes explained. “I mean, it’s not like two-three years ago, guys weren’t trying. I think we’ve always cared.”
