Government issues high-severity warning to iOS, iPadOS and macOS users following iPhone 16 launch

The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a cybersecurity watchdog under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has issued a high-threat alert for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS users soon after the launch of the iPhone 16. The alert suggests that multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products that could allow attackers to access sensitive user information.

What can these vulnerabilities be exploited for?

CERT-In warns that in addition to accessing sensitive information, these vulnerabilities could be exploited by attackers to “execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, cause denial of service (DoS) conditions, bypass authentication, gain elevated privileges, and conduct spoofing attacks on the targeted system.”

Who is affected by this vulnerability?

Apple iOS versions older than 18 and iPadOS versions older than 18

Apple iOS versions prior to 17.7 and iPadOS versions prior to 17.7

Apple macOS Sonoma versions older than 14.7

Apple macOS Ventura versions older than 13.7

Apple macOS Sequoia versions older than 15

Apple tvOS versions older than 18

Apple watchOS versions older than 11

Apple Safari versions older than 18

Apple Xcode versions older than 16

Apple VisionOS versions prior to version 2

What should Apple users do?

CERT-In states that these vulnerabilities have been fixed in the latest version of Apple’s software update and warns iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, Safari, Xcode, and visionOS users to update their software to the latest version released by the Cupertino tech giant to stay safe.

Interestingly, CERT-In also warned about vulnerabilities in Google Chrome earlier this month. The agency said the flaws only affected users older than 128.0.6613.119/.120 for Windows and macOS, and versions older than 128.0.6613.119 for Linux.
