Central Electricity Authority approves two hydropower storage projects in Maharashtra – ThePrint – ANIFeed

New Delhi (India), September 22 (ANI): The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved two additional pumped-storage power (PSP) projects in Maharashtra to meet India’s renewable energy targets, the Ministry of Power said on Sunday.

These include the 1,500 MW Bhavali PSP being developed by JSW Energy Ltd. and the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri PSP being developed by Tata Power Co. Ltd. Together, these PSPs will provide storage capacity in excess of 15 GWh (gigawatt-hours).

According to the Ministry of Energy, this approval will help to accelerate the integration of renewable energy sources and support the transition to a greener energy system.

These PSPs have given their approval to the support of the Central Water Commission (CWC), Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS) and were approved within 10 days of completion of the DPR, the ministry said.

The Ministry of Energy reported that the developers of these nuclear power plant projects declared that they would accelerate their launch and complete them within 44-46 months, i.e. by 2028.

According to the ministry, this type of large-scale energy storage is crucial to meeting peak demand during hours when there is no solar activity, and also ensures grid stability, which translates into its stability.

According to the statement, the CEA intends to conduct at least two PSPs per month throughout the current year, contingent on developers completing DPR procedures.

In 2024-2025, the CEA has planned to approve 15 hydropower plants with a total capacity of 25,500 MW, of which 4 plants with a total capacity of 5,100 MW have already been approved.

To facilitate the conduct of business, CEA has developed an online portal “Jalvi-store” which will provide greater transparency in the processing of PSP distributions at the pre-DPR stage.

The CEA highlighted the participation of private players, adding that the approval of these projects demonstrates the growing role of the private sector in driving India’s energy transformation.

“This marks a shift towards a collaborative energy ecosystem where the public and private sectors come together to achieve national goals. This partnership will accelerate progress towards India’s renewable energy goals. CEA is confident that these projects will play a key role in enhancing the reliability and sustainability of India’s power grid, paving the way for a robust and resilient energy future,” the statement added.
