Brewers beat Diamondbacks, covering 8 points

Jake Bauers scored the game-winning run by coming on after scoring and smacking a walk-off single to end the eighth inning, in which the Milwaukee Brewers erased an eight-point deficit and avoided a series sweep by rallying behind to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-9 on Sunday.

The Brewers trailed 8-0 in the third inning before rallying and tying the score at 9 with three runs with two outs in the eighth. Jackson Chourio walked, took second base on a single by Blake Perkins and scored on an RBI single by Garrett Mitchell to make it 9-7. Justin Martinez (5-6) changed the score, and Rhys Hoskins tied the score with a single to left that scored two.

Willy Adames doubled, and Hoskins reached third base before Bauers hit a slow ground ball to score and single to left.

Jared Koenig (9-4) earned the win, and Brewers’ Devin Williams pitched a scoreless save in the ninth inning, making 13 of 14 chances.

Milwaukee pulled to within 8-4 with a run in the third, two runs in the fourth and an unearned run in the sixth. Milwaukee made it 8-6 in the seventh on RBI doubles by Hoskins and Adames.

Arizona (87-69) entered Sunday two games behind San Diego for the NL wild card spot and a game ahead of the New York Mets, who play Philadelphia on Sunday night. Milwaukee (89-67), which won the NL Central title on Wednesday, remains the only team in the majors this season without a losing streak of four or more games.

Randal Grichuk’s RBI single in the eighth inning off Jared Koenig (9-4) gave Arizona a 9-6 lead. Mitchell responded with an RBI single in the second.

Josh Bell and Eugenio Suarez hit home runs in the third inning, scoring seven runs after Milwaukee starter Frankie Montas (7-12) lasted only 2 2/3 innings. Geraldo Perdomo hit a triple into the right-field corner with one out and ran home on an errant throw by second baseman Brice Turanga.

Arizona loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a catcher’s interference. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had an RBI groundout and Jake McCarthy hit a two-run single to right to give Arizona a 5-0 lead.

Bell hit his 19th home run, a 436-foot blast to center field, and Suarez added his 29th home run to give the Diamondbacks an 8-0 lead.

Montas scored eight runs with seven runs scored, six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

Ketel Marte gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead with one out in the first half, hitting his 35th home run, a career high.
