Maynilad collaborates with DOST to develop waste-to-energy solutions under the DOST-Balik Science Program

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has partnered with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to explore waste-to-energy solutions, specifically the conversion of sewage sludge—an organic byproduct of Maynilad’s wastewater treatment process—into biogas.

The partnership, which came about through Maynilad’s participation in the DOST-led “Balik Scientist Program,” involved leveraging the expertise of returning Filipino scientist Dr. Mario Rebosury to help evaluate and pilot technologies that can convert sewage sludge into a renewable energy source.

Maynilad is the first water utility to participate in the DOST-Balik Science Program, a government initiative aimed at promoting scientific knowledge exchange and technology development in the country. The program encourages Filipino scientists to return to the Philippines and share their knowledge, contributing to the development of various sectors, including health research and development.

During his six-month stay at Maynilad as part of the program, Dr. Rebosura shared innovative approaches in biomass management to refine Maynilad’s ongoing research into waste-to-energy technologies. This collaboration supported Maynilad’s goal of reducing the environmental impact of biomass disposal while providing energy generation opportunities.

“As part of our commitment to the environment, Maynilad continually seeks ways to reduce waste and promote circular economy principles. This partnership with DOST has allowed us to address the challenge of sewage sludge disposal while also leveraging renewable energy solutions that can benefit both our operations and the environment,” said Ramoncito S. Fernandez, President and CEO of Maynilad.

DOST’s Balik Scientist Program has played a key role in connecting Maynilad with Filipino scientists who have acquired expertise abroad. “We are excited about the potential of this project to contribute to the country’s renewable energy goals. This collaboration with Maynilad underscores the critical role of science in addressing key challenges in the water sector. Indeed, through science and technology, we can provide solutions and open up opportunities for the Filipino people,” said DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr.
