iPhone 16 Pro touchscreen issues: Users report taps and swipes being ignored, netizens respond; ‘it’s driving me crazy’

Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 series at the company’s It’s Glowtime event earlier this month. While the standard iPhone 16 series also received a few new additions, the iPhone 16 Pro series remained the best Apple has to offer, thanks to the powerful A18 Pro chipset and improved cameras. However, a new report suggests that iPhone 16 Pro users are increasingly reporting issues with using their devices’ touchscreens.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, iPhone 16 Pro users are having issues with the phone’s touchscreen responsiveness. The issue is causing users to see their taps and swipes being ignored, causing several normal actions to be affected, including scrolling, pressing buttons, and skipping virtual keyboard presses.

The report claims that the iPhone 16 Pro touchscreen issue may be caused by a software bug rather than a specific hardware error. The touch rejection algorithm in iOS appears to be the cause of this new problem.

Why are iPhone 16 Pro users having issues with touch rejection?

A report from 9to5Mac suggests that iPhone 16 Pro users may be experiencing this issue due to the new device’s thinner-than-ever bezels, which causes the user’s hands to accidentally touch the edges of the screen, resulting in dropped touch response.

It states that due to the thinner form factor and thinner bezels, users can hold the phone by resting their fingers on the sides of the display. The report also states that the touch rejection issue may be more pronounced when the phone is used without a case.

Internet users respond to iPhone 16 Pro touchscreen issues:

A Reddit thread about iPhone 16 Pro touchscreen issues has sparked mixed reactions from Apple users. While many iPhone 16 series users detailed the issues they were experiencing, many older iPhone users said they were also experiencing these issues after updating to iOS 18.

One iPhone 16 Pro Max user who described the issue on Reddit wrote, “This has never happened on any other iPhone model, but it happens regularly on my 16 Pro Max… Someone in another thread suggested that it’s just the area of the screen next to the camera control button, but for me it also happens when my finger touches the bottom of the screen — when I’m reaching for something at the top of the screen.”

“It’s me!! I thought it was just me. Taps and swipes don’t register consistently. Typing is just so much worse. It never hits the letter I want to hit,” wrote another user

The iPhone 15 Pro also confirmed it has this issue, writing, “Issue with iOS 18. I started seeing this on my 15 pro since I was on dev 18.1 beta 3 and I still see it on the 16 pro. It happens most often in apps that have lists of items, like Reddit or Twitter, but closing and reopening resolves this issue.”

Yet another user wrote: “This is driving me crazy! I thought it was app related because when I force close the app it works again. I hope there’s an OTA fix soon.”
