“Penguin” is a chilling hit.

According to HBO, the spin-off series starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti has opened to 5.3 million viewers in the U.S. across all platforms since its Sept. 19 debut. That includes reruns on HBO as well as streaming viewership. That puts it ahead of the final season premiere of “Succession,” which drew 4.9 million viewers, and the second-season premiere of “White Lotus,” which drew 4.1 million viewers. It also comes in just behind the premiere of “True Detective: Night Country,” which drew 5.7 million viewers.

Additionally, the series achieved the largest four-day audience for a new series on Max in any region worldwide since The Last of Us in January 2023.

Farrell reprises his role from The Batman in the series, once again playing Gotham City gangster Oswald “Oz” Cobb. The series begins in the days following the events of The Batman, with Oz seeking to take control of Gotham’s underworld in the power vacuum created by the death of his former boss, Carmine Falcone.

The series has also received a lot of critical acclaim, with The Penguin currently holding a 94% positive critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In its review for DiversityAramide Tinubu wrote that “a masterful study of crime, the series is twisted, disturbing and deeply fascinating.”

The series cast also includes Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo and Michael Zegen. Mark Strong plays Falcone in flashbacks, and John Turturro played the character in “The Batman.”

Lauren LeFranc is a writer, executive producer and showrunner for “The Penguin.” “The Batman” director Matt Reeves is an executive producer through 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark is an executive producer through Dylan Clark Productions. Farrell is an executive producer in addition to starring. Craig Zobel is an executive producer and director of the first three episodes. 6th & Idaho’s Daniel Pipski is also an executive producer, as is Bill Carraro, and Rafi Crohn is a co-executive producer.
