App State Field Hockey Opens Conference Play with Victory – The Appalachian

Mountaineer Field Hockey started conference play on the right foot with a 2-0 win over Ohio University on Friday.

Experienced striker Charlotte Bosma continued her excellent play this season, scoring the first goal of the match in the first quarter, assisted by younger striker Henriette Stegen.

Ohio had five shots in the second quarter, but each one was stopped by the Mountaineers defense and goalie Claire Grenis.

The Mountaineers offense did not score a single point in the quarter. App State maintained a 1-0 lead to end the half.

App State came out of the break with a strong attack. The Black and Gold had seven shots and a goal in the third quarter. App State was able to convert the goal on a goal by center midfielder Florine Koopman to extend the advantage to 2-0.

The Mountaineers defense held strong in the fourth quarter and held the Bobcats to a single shot. App State’s offense also held them scoreless despite taking five shots in the quarter.

Mountaineers won 2-0.

The Black and Gold lead the Mid-American Conference with three shutouts on the season. Part of that can be attributed to Grenis, who had four saves on the day.

App State will look to remain undefeated in the conference against visiting Bellarmine on Friday, with the game scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
