How to watch CrowdStrike face off against U.S. lawmakers for the first time on Tuesday

CrowdStrike will be in the spotlight again on Tuesday when a senior executive testifies before a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on the company’s disastrous July software update that led to a global IT outage.

Adam Meyers, senior vice president of adversarial operations at CrowdStrike, will appear before lawmakers to explain what caused the disruption and the measures the company is taking to ensure nothing like this happens again. His testimony could even influence future cyber legislation.

The flawed software, which the Texas-based company deployed on Windows computers, has disabled IT systems around the world, causing major disruptions to airlines, airports, banks, healthcare facilities, retail stores and other businesses large and small.

The damage was so severe that the incident is now considered the worst blunder to ever hit the IT industry. CrowdStrike also won the Most Epic Fail award at the recent Pwnie Awards, where company CEO Michael Sentonas attended and accepted the award in person.

Shortly after the outage two months ago, CrowdStrike founder and CEO George Kurtz publicly apologized, saying his team had “quickly identified the issue and implemented a solution.”

It said it was not a cyberattack and the outage was caused by a “flaw discovered in a Falcon content update for Windows hosts,” adding that Mac and Linux hosts were not affected.

Kurtz promised he was committed to providing “full transparency about how this happened” and would take action “to prevent something like this from happening again.”

It is hoped that Meyers’ appearance Tuesday before the House Homeland Security Committee will shed new light on the incident, as tough questions are expected during his tenure as executive director.
