Former Philadelphia Phillies Trade Acquisition DFA’d by NL East rival

The former Philadelphia Phillies player has been placed on the reserve list for the second time in 2024.

The Phillies’ NL East rival Miami Marlins made a series of roster moves Tuesday to bring some players back from the injured list. The team welcomed back outfielder Dane Myers after a fractured left ankle. To make room on the 40-man roster, Miami designated former Philadelphia player Cristian Pache.

Pache was part of a trade early in the 2023 season that sent him to the Phillies from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Billy Sullivan, marking the second time in his career he has been traded.

The 25-year-old has appeared in just 48 games in 2023 after battling multiple injuries in his first season in Philadelphia. He was placed on the injured list with a torn meniscus in his right knee and irritation in his right elbow. In 98 games with the team, Pache has slashed .218/.302/.335 with just two home runs and 20 RBI.

After appearing in 50 games for the Phillies in 2024, the former highly rated prospect changed clubs for the third time when Philadelphia traded for Pache at the MLB Trade Deadline. He was part of a package that helped acquire right fielder Austin Hays from the Baltimore Orioles.

Though Hays has also struggled with injuries this season with the Phillies, his batting and fielding numbers have already surpassed those of Pache during his time in Philadelphia.

The Marlins acquired him after he played in only three games for the Orioles before being released (DFA).

Pache spent 35 games with Miami, where he struggled from the start, hitting just .183/.234/.517 with one home run and seven RBI, which included a 32.8% strikeout rate.

Pache has a good chance of making it past the reserve roster and accepting a permanent trade to Triple-A Jacksonville to remain in the Marlins organization.

If he leaves Miami, he could be signed to his sixth MLB team in two years. However, with the number of teams that have moved on in such a short time, his chances of continuing his Major League career are diminishing.
