US Ban on Chinese Software – Protectionism

China has firmly opposed U.S. plans to ban Chinese software and hardware from connected vehicles on American roads and called for the withdrawal of relevant restrictive measures, the Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, the United States has over the years resorted to a series of protectionist measures against Chinese automotive products, including imposing high tariffs on Chinese cars, limiting participation in government procurement and introducing discriminatory subsidy policies.

Now the United States has proposed imposing restrictions on the deployment of Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles, citing baseless so-called national security considerations, the ministry added.

The ministry said the US actions have no factual basis and violate the principles of the market economy and fair competition. They constitute a typical protectionist approach that seriously hinders normal cooperation between China and the US in the connected vehicle sector.

The ministry added that the measures taken by the US also disrupt and distort the global automotive supply chain, ultimately harming the interests of American consumers.

China calls on the United States to stop its unlawful actions and unjustified suppression of Chinese companies, and take necessary measures to resolutely protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, the ministry said.
