Apple is once again updating the AirPods Pro 2 firmware in preparation for the hearing aid feature

For the second time in as many weeks, Apple has updated the firmware on AirPods Pro 2 (both USB-C and Lightning versions).

Apple has not yet published release notes for this firmware update, but will do so on this support page.

AirPods 2 are expected to feature a new “clinical-grade” hearing testing feature this fall, as well as the ability to function as over-the-counter hearing aids. On September 12, Apple received the first-ever FDA authorization for hearing aid software. There is some evidence that the latest iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 include code for this feature, but it has not yet been activated in beta. It’s entirely possible that Apple will enable this feature via a server-side switch when it’s ready, and the AirPods Pro 2’s frequent firmware updates could be the result of rigorous internal testing of this feature.

Updating the firmware of your AirPods

It is not possible to force an update to new software; will be automatically installed once your AirPods are in the case and charging. It may take hours or even days to download the latest firmware. If you haven’t used your AirPods for a while, taking them out of the case and using them for a few minutes before putting them back in and connecting them to the charger can speed things up.

To check the firmware version of your AirPods, open the Settings app, select your connected AirPods (top), scroll down all options to ABOUT section and look at Version line. You will also find this information in General > ABOUT > (name of your AirPods).
