The Channels cord-cutting app is getting new “personal sections” and “theatrical mode” features.

Fan-favorite cutting app Channels is rolling out a big update this month focused on personalization. Channels 6.0 for Apple TV and iOS adds a new “Personal Sections” feature, customized navigation, a new “Theater Mode” and much more. For details please go below.

For those unfamiliar, Channels is designed to allow you to watch and record live TV from anywhere. It works when connected to an antenna or cable with a TV tuner, with the HDHomeRun TV tuner being one of the most popular options.

You can also sign in to channels using your existing streaming TV service or cable provider. For example, if you subscribe to Fubo TV, you can log in to your Fubo account in Channels to watch and record everything in one app.

6.0 Channel Features

The main feature of Channels 6.0 is the personal sections. This feature allows you to “create a completely custom channel experience.” This feature appears as you continue to use streaming services away customization and personalization by the user.

Here’s how the Channels team describes the new Personal Sections feature:

Channels and personal sections built into the network DVR server administrator allow you to browse the library in a way that is understandable to you. You can create sections for family members, favorite genres, sports teams, or simply replace an existing section on your channels that you don’t like.

Using personal sections, you can freely design your own sections to display exactly the content you want, with your own order and graphics. “You can customize how elements are displayed and even choose from three optional layout designs,” Channels explains. This feature also integrates with Smart Rules for additional customization and automation.

The Channels team has published a dedicated guide to using the new Personal Sections website that’s worth reading.

Channels 6.0 also introduces a new sidebar navigation interface for iPhone and iPad apps. This is also fully customizable:

Previously, iPhone and iPad channels used a native tab bar. Tab bars have a limited number of items they can display. This meant that iPhone and iPad couldn’t participate in navigation customizations made on Apple TV.

That’s all changed! The sidebar on iPhone and iPad can be customized in exactly the same way as on Apple TV. And if you have customized it via server-side settings, the sidebar will be customized as soon as you open it on your device.

What’s more, there’s a whole new way to manage your sidebar items with server-side settings that let you arrange the order of items any way you want.

Finally, this month’s channel update also adds a brand new Cinema Mode feature. When enabled, Cinematic Mode will “play multiple trailers and a featurette presentation before the movie starts.” Essentially, it’s a way to recreate more of the cinema experience without having to leave the comfort of your home.
