Popular cruise lines are banning an item many travelers consider essential: Here’s why

Before traveling, it’s always a good idea to double check your bags to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.

But you can also take a look to make sure you’re not packing anything you shouldn’t have.

Recently, the popular cruise line Royal Caribbean quietly added power strips, multi-plug outlets, and surge protectors to its list of “prohibited items.”

Several outlets report that the reason for adding these items to the list is that older ships are not equipped to support multiple outlets to charge more than a few devices at a time.

While the company didn’t explain why these items were added to its list, many experts pointed out that plugging too many devices into outlets that aren’t rated for them can lead to an electrical fire.

Members First CoOp warns that overloading sockets poses a fire risk.

“No matter how tempting it may be, don’t plug more devices into one outlet than you should. Overloaded electrical sockets are the leading cause of fires in residential buildings,” the company said in a statement.

The report notes that power strips only add additional outlets. They do not change the amount of energy drawn from the socket.
