Hurricane Helene has left its mark on North Carolina, and many residents are trying to piece together the devastation it left behind.

Helene brought heavy rainfall, intense winds, damaging debris and flooding to the state. Power outages and life-threatening flash flooding were reported in the western part of the state.

Residents experienced heavy rainfall in many areas of North Carolina, such as Chimney Rock and Asheville. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s office reported the highest rainfall recorded was 29.5 inches at Busick Raws in Yancey County, North Carolina.

Heavy rainfall prompted the Rutherford County Emergency Management Board to issue an immediate evacuation order for residents near the Lake Lure Dam on Friday morning.

The county office released an update on water levels at the dam on Friday evening.

“The water level in Lake Lure is no longer rising and is starting to fall,” the county clerk’s office wrote in a Facebook post. “Emergency personnel rescued more than 25 people through quick water rescue, emergency medical services, fire and law enforcement efforts.”

At approximately 9:00 p.m. local time, emergency personnel provided an update stating that as a result of the storm, many phone lines throughout the county, especially in Lake Lure, were down.

As of Saturday afternoon, North Carolina had a total of 635,887 power outages, according to the USA TODAY Power Outage Map.
