Shah Rukh Khan quotes MS Dhoni on IIFA retirement

At the recent IIFA Awards ceremony, Bollywood superstar and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) co-owner Shah Rukh Khan made headlines when he made a humorous reference to cricket legend MS Dhoni while talking about retirement. This amusing exchange occurred during a conversation with director Karan Johar, during which Shah Rukh used Dhoni’s cricketing longevity as an example to highlight the essence of being a ‘legend’.

Context of the conversation

At the awards show, Karan Johar teased Shah Rukh about his own retirement plans. In response, Shah Rukh noted:

“The most important thing in legends… unki khasiyat ye hoti hai ki legends ko maalum hota hai, when to stop, when to retire. Like the great Sachin Tendulkar, like Sunil Chhetri – a footballer, like Roger Federer – a great tennis star. Everyone knows when to retire and I think it’s time for you to do it too.”

When Karan responded by asking why Shah Rukh himself is not retiring, he joked:

“Actually, the main doosre kisam ka legendary hoon. Main aur Dhoni ek kisam ke legend hai. Na kar ke bhi 10 baar IPL khel jaate hai.”

This light-hearted banter not only entertained the audience but also drew attention to the recent changes in the IPL retention rules which could keep MS Dhoni in the game for another season.

After Shah Rukh Khan’s statements and the BCCI’s data retention policy announcement, social media was abuzz with memes and discussions about Dhoni’s future. Bollywood actress Vicky Kaushal, who was also present at the event, added:

“Retirement is for legends. Kings are forever.”

IPL 2025 Retention Policy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced new player retention rules for IPL 2025, allowing each team to retain a maximum of six players. It’s worth noting that one of these players must be uncapped. As per the new guidelines, an Indian player with the national team can be deemed not to have played for the national team if he has not played in the starting eleven in any international match in the last five years or does not have a central contract with the BCCI.

This rule change means that MS Dhoni, who last played for India in July 2019 during the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, can now be retained by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore ahead of megamecz auction. The event created excitement among fans and analysts regarding Dhoni’s potential participation in IPL 2025.

Consequences of Dhoni’s possible return

Shah Rukh Khan’s comments on legends and their longevity resonate deeply with fans who have followed MS Dhoni’s illustrious career. He has led CSK to many IPL titles, his presence on the field is not only about performing but also inspiring the younger players.

Retaining Dhoni would enable CSK to maintain their core group while also having room in their budget for big-money acquisitions during the auctions. This strategic advantage could prove crucial as teams prepare for a highly competitive season.
