The Ministry of Electricity excludes power vessels, citing grid stability

KUwait, September 29: Sources from the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy have rejected a proposal to introduce power-generating vessels to Kuwait to strengthen the electricity grid for the upcoming summer season.

According to sources, the committee tasked with assessing electricity project initiatives has concluded that the proposal is not feasible due to several technical issues that cannot be addressed at present. They noted that countries typically resort to power-generating ships when their electricity grids are not stable; however, Kuwait’s network is one of the most reliable.

The committee further assessed various power purchase initiatives and determined that they were too expensive compared to the costs at which the ministry currently generates electricity. Additionally, these initiatives would require the ministry to secure land and cover operational fuel costs.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy received a request from the Public Welfare Authority to provide 3,600 megawatts of electricity to the cities of South Sabah Al-Ahmad and South Saad Al-Abdullah.

Sources explained that this proposal is part of the Public Housing Welfare Authority’s strategy for the development of new residential towns, aimed at ensuring the availability of electricity for new plots. This initiative reflects ongoing collaboration between the ministry and the housing authority to accurately assess electricity and water needs in emerging residential areas.
