Kolkata: For the first time, a state fire has occurred in the state emergency services department will present Walkie talkies with a SIM card to be used for experimental purposes during Durga Puja to improve communication in emergency situations, including live data and photo transmission over the Internet. The authorities will also introduce 50 new bicycles for firefighters on the streets and will start checking pandals across the city from Monday.
Fire and Emergency Services Department Minister Sujit Bose said the department would use 20 SIM-equipped walkie-talkies during the puja. “With this system, officials at the fire brigade headquarters will be able to know whether any fire has occurred in a particular district,” Bose said, adding that two new fire stations – at Dubrajpur in Birbhum and Birpara in Alipurduar – are expected to be inaugurated before the puja.
Authorities said about 10 of these walkie-talkies would be used in different parts of the city and the rest in districts. “In addition to communication, officers on site will be able to transmit live data and photos of each fire incident directly to the control room. From now on, walkie-talkies with a SIM card will be rented for a trial period. If the campaign is successful, the department plans to purchase such walkie-talkies for regular use,” said one of the seniors fire brigade clerk.
Authorities said that in addition to the 162 existing fire stations across the state, 96 temporary stations would be set up in the city and districts to manage emergencies. Besides, fire brigade and rescue services will also organize awareness campaigns and set up around 29 kiosks near various puja pandals.
