Number theory: three charts explaining the hilsa trade between India and Bangladesh

Sep 30, 2024 08:31 EST

Over the past five years, hilsa imports have on average accounted for just 0.7% of India’s total imports from Bangladesh in value terms.

The collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh will have serious consequences for India’s geostrategic interests in the region. Even as Bangladesh’s internal and external politics continue to change, among the most talked about effects of the changing of the guard in Bangladesh is whether India will regularly import hilsa or Tenualosa ilisha – it is one of the most expensive and sought after varieties of fish from West Bengal and considered an integral part of high-class Bengali cuisine – from its eastern neighbor. The caretaker government first announced a ban on the export of hilsa before agreeing to allow 3,000 tonnes in the months leading up to the festive season in West Bengal.
