Justice Manmohan: Everything you need to know about the newly sworn-in Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court

On Sunday, September 29, Justice Manmohan took oath as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The 61-year-old judge took the oath of office at the Raj Niwas office, the lieutenant governor’s office. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena took the oath at a ceremony attended by several dignitaries, including Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Marlena.

Justice Manmohan took over as Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on November 9, 2023, following the elevation of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma to the Supreme Court.

Early life

Born on December 17, 1962, into a wealthy family in Delhi, Justice Manmohan pursued his education at the Modern School, Delhi, Barakhamba Road. The 61-year-old Chief Justice is the son of the late Jagmohan, a bureaucrat-turned-politician who was governor of Jammu and Kashmir and lieutenant governor of Delhi.

Career

After completing his BA (Hons) in History from Hindu College, one of the premier colleges of Delhi University, he pursued LL.B. from the University of Delhi Campus Law Center.

At the age of 25, he joined the Delhi Bar Council as an advocate. After practicing primarily in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court, he served as Senior Advocate for the Government of India Panel in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India. His areas of expertise include civil, criminal, constitutional, tax, arbitration, trademark and service mark matters.

In January last year, Justice Manmohan was appointed as a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court. Some of the important cases for which he is known include Dabhol Power Company, Jewelery Trust Hyderabad Nizam case, Claridges Hotel dispute, Modi family case as well as Gujarat Ambuja Cement sales tax and Fatehpur Sikri encroachment issue.

Notable achievements

On March 13, 2008, Justice Manmohan was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and became a permanent judge on December 17 the following year. Notably, he was appointed acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on November 9 last year.
