Rudy Giuliani’s daughter supports Harris and mourns ‘losing my dad to Trump’ | Rudy Giuliani

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has gained the support of Rudy Giuliani’s daughter, who declared: “I’m mourning the loss of my dad to (Donald) Trump. I cannot bear to lose our country to him.”

Caroline Rose Giuliani wrote in Vanity Fair in which she lamented how her father, once the former president’s personal lawyer and trusted advisor, became caught up in the “destructive trail” and chaos of the Trump administration and its aftermath.

“Unfortunately, I am perfectly suited to remind Americans how disastrous it can be to be associated with Trump, even for those who believe he is on their side,” wrote Giuliani, a California filmmaker and activist who has often weighed in on issues related to her political positions father.

“I constantly ask myself how America got back here, even given the possibility of re-electing Donald Trump, after all the damage he caused, both while in office and since. There are stark reminders of Trump’s path of destruction all around us, and it breaks my heart to watch my dad become one of them.”

Rudy Giuliani, who became the wildly popular mayor of New York after leading the city through the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, has paid a heavy price for promoting Trump’s lies that his 2020 election defeat was fraudulent.

He was permanently barred from practicing law in Washington last week for leading the legal effort to overturn Joe Biden’s victory and tried to file for bankruptcy to avoid paying $148.1 million in damages to two Georgia election workers he defamed.

“Watching my dad’s life unravel since he joined forces with Trump has been incredibly painful, both on a personal level and because his death ties into the dark force that threatens to consume America once again,” wrote Caroline Giuliani, referring to to Trump’s third presidential term as the Republican candidate.

“I do not wish to disregard individual responsibility in the slightest, but it would be naive of us to ignore the fact that many of those closest to Trump have been plunged into a disastrous downward spiral. If we put Trump back in the driver’s seat this fall, our country will be no exception.”

She described her relationship with her father as “cartoonishly complicated.”

“Despite his faults, I love him. I have watched him experience surreal highs and now unfathomable lows. The last thing I want to do is hurt him, especially when he’s already depressed,” she wrote. “Besides, we never know how much time we have left with our parents. The whole thing makes this the hardest song I’ve ever written. But this moment and this election are so much more important than any of us.”

She cited Harris’s positions on reproductive rights, as well as the economy, foreign and environmental policy, as her reasons for supporting her.

“We need experienced, reasonable and fundamentally decent leaders who will fight for us, not against us, who will protect our democracy, not dismantle it,” she wrote.

“As a 35-year-old woman who recently got engaged and hopes to get married, and who is more joyful than apprehensive about the possibility of becoming a parent, I must advocate for a future where raising children is worth it.”

She also recalled begging her father to reconsider when she learned he was considering becoming Trump’s lawyer at a New York cigar bar.

“Surrounded by thick smoke and powerful men, I cried for several minutes, and then spent the next three hours forcefully persuading my father not to follow this morally dangerous path,” she wrote.

She said that being his daughter allowed her to see Rudy Giuliani’s flaws “that people blinded by his star don’t see.”

She wrote: “The deeper my dad gets stuck in the quicksand of his problems, the more fleeting our opportunities for connection become as father and daughter develop.

“After months of feeling the sadness that comes with the death of a loved one, it dawned on me that I was mourning the loss of my dad to Trump. I cannot bear to lose our country to him.”
