Just Browsing: What’s New at The Frankie Shop with Lisa Aiken, Vogue’s Executive Buying Director

The Frankie Shop at 100 Stanton Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan is incredibly iconic. I remember when it first opened, it was tiny and employees had to go down stairs to the basement to get to the warehouse. It is incredible that Gaëlle Drevet managed to transform it into a larger, renovated space, and shopping here is now an amazing experience.

I stopped by to find a few pieces that would work for Fashion Month and the transition into fall. I immediately liked that everything was divided into colors. You could just see how the pieces would look together very quickly. There is no internal debate about how to style X with Y. It was a very simple shopping experience that I appreciated.

The brand has so many cult favorites, especially outerwear and tailoring, but interestingly, I’ve never been a fan of tailoring – something I discovered this time around. In addition to the separate pieces, I really liked all the transparent elements for layering. Below are some key pieces I tried on at The Frankie Shop, how to style them, and a few finishing touches to complete the look.

Pure delights

I’m one of those people who, once I find a style I like, buy more of it. Peri’s sheer skirt is a good example of this. I already have it in white and black, but then I tried it on in burgundy and I liked it too. However, it is difficult to style. There’s definitely a question of “what underwear to wear”, so I played with layers: I combined it with a slightly transparent trench coat and a white T-shirt. I also tried it on with a really long jacket.

Burgundy is the new black

I generally wear a lot of black, but it’s nice to come back in the summer and not necessarily end up there. I appreciate fall neutrals that don’t feel loud, and burgundy is one of them. Frankie’s has tons of great burgundy clothes right now. I wanted to try a muted look with the Peri skirt, so I paired it with a matching split top that was a bit longer and had enough coverage.

Easy weekend clothes

I love anything oversized. This tank top will be the hardest working item in my closet. I can only say this because it’s so simple. And I love wide-leg jeans. The proportions are loose and easy, like you don’t even have to try.

Light tailoring

All of The Frankie Shop’s lightweight tailoring pieces are perfect for transitional styles. I’m not a fan of dresses, but my friends achieve the same thing. This is the complete look – one and done. You don’t have to think about it when you get up in the morning. I can easily wear these pants with just a T-shirt – they look equally good with or without a jacket in the office. On colder days, I wrapped a sweater around my neck and put a coat over it. I like the versatility of these pieces to survive a variety of weather conditions and scenarios. I very rarely do a full look other than tailoring – and even then, I wear most of my jackets with jeans – but it was too easy not to.

I’ve never been one to turn down a head-to-toe gray look, so I really liked this color – it’s more of a chalky, greenish-gray. I wanted to add some color to my shoes, so I did it with red sandals. This is definitely a Fashion Week look. Swapping out your vest for sweaters that can be easily layered helps liven it up in the fall.
