Justice Mukerji’s Farewell: A Catalyst for Change in Calcutta High Court | Kolkata News

Justice Mukerji bids Cal HC farewell, hopes exit is a 'catalyst for change'

Kolkata: Justice IP Mukerji bade farewell to Calcutta High Court on Monday, saying he hoped his departure for the po-st of Meghalaya HC Chief Justice would act as a “catalyst” for “long-expected change”.
“After an innings of around 16 years, it’s time to say bye-bye to this high court. I say bye-bye with a lot of joy because we exit from the high court kind of opens the bottleneck for judges — my brothers and sisters — who are junior to me to also be considered for promotion and transfer, etc.And so far those judges who have been transferred outside the HC may also be considered to be brought back here. “I think this would act as a catalyst to bring about a long-expected change in the HC,” he said.
The Supreme Court college had recommended appointment of chief justices in Meghalaya, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, MP and Himachal Pradesh high courts. The ministry of law and justice had notified the appointment of Justice Mukerji as Meghalaya HC CJ on Sept 21.
Born on Sept 6, 1963 into a family of lawyers, Justice Mukerji’s father and paternal grandfather were barristers and senior advocates of Calcutta HC while his maternal grandfather was a senior lawyer of Kanpur district court. Justice Mukerji was enrolled as an advocate on July 2, 1990 and practiced in Calcutta High Court.
At his farewell, Justice Mukerji recalled that he had been sworn in as a judge at Calcutta HC on May 18, 2009. He fondly remembered his childhood visits to court after school to meet his grandfather and father. “I have tried to dispense justice to the best of my ability and there is no reason why I should not have been polite to members of the bar. I belong to the same fraternity and, after having become a judge, I did not forget that I belonged to the fraternity. The roles may have been different, roles were reversed but the commitment remained,” Justice Mukerji said.
