CBS moderators slammed for violating vice presidential debate rules, fact-checking Vance and muting microphones

As the Republican vice presidential nominee, Vance faced off against Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris on the debate stage Tuesday night ahead of the 2024 election.

Vance argued that President Joe Biden and Harris’ open border policies have created economic, health and education crises in cities like Springfield, Ohio, which Vance said are negatively impacted by illegal immigration.

“In Springfield, Ohio, my greatest concern is for the American citizens whose lives have been devastated by Kamala Harris’s open border. It’s a disgrace,” Vance said.

Before moving on to the next question, Brennan asked the audience to check in on Vance, saying, “Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does indeed have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status and Temporary Protected Status. “

As both Brennan and O’Donnell tried to quickly move on, Vance interjected, noting that the rules of debate do not include fact-checking. Vance then talked about the Biden administration’s “CBP app,” which gives immigrants legal status “on the wave of Kamala Harris’s open border wand,” noting the difference between others who seek legal immigration through green card applications.

“This is a flirtation with illegal immigration, Margaret, by our own leadership, and Kamala Harris has opened the door,” Vance continued.

As Vance continued, Walz also wanted to comment before muting their microphones.

“The audience can’t hear you because your microphones are turned off,” Brennan then said.

Many people on social media commented on Brennan’s fact-checking and muting of microphones.

“CBS moderators simply MUTE J.D. Vance’s mic when he called them out for lying about Kamala Harris’s open borders policy,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said on X. “HANNA.”

Political commentator Collin Rugg noted that Vance vetted Brennan and O’Donnell himself.

“J.D. Vance fact-checks CBS moderators after they tried to ‘fact-check’ him on the Haitian migrant crisis in Springfield, Ohio,” Rugg said.

TikTok’s Libs called the situation “amazing.”

Outkick founder and political commentator Clay Travis praised Vance for the way he handled fact-checking.

“Here’s JD Vance destroying the CBS moderators,” Travis wrote on X alongside a video of the exchange.

The Trump campaign also responded by fact-checking and muting the microphone.

“@JDVance just fact-checked @NorahODonnell and @margbrennan on the CBS News app about Kamala Harris’s app allowing illegal aliens to enter this country,” Trump War Room, the Trump campaign’s X account, stated. “They were so irritated that they cut off his microphone.”

Others questioned the bias shown by CBS News against Vance in the way it presented questions during the debate.

“CBS thinks no one sees this? When they ask Vance for an answer, they load up the question to hide Walz’s last answer,” said author and political commentator Andy McCarthy. “When they ask Walz for an answer, I say, ‘Whatever you want to answer, big guy.’ And Vance is still in charge.

Washington Examiner comment writer Quin Hillyer also asked if “EVERYONE in the establishment media has a damn clue how to be even remotely honest or what journalistic ethics are?”

During the debate, both Vance and Walz were praised for their civility to each other.

Tuesday night’s debate is the only scheduled debate between Vance and Walz.
