This amazing F1 app is the best reason to buy Vision Pro

At $3,500, you need a very good reason to invest in the Apple Vision Pro Headset. A new app called Lapz could be just that for Formula 1 fans.

Lapz effectively turns any room into race control, allowing F1 fans to view multiple race broadcasts, stats screens and 3D track maps simultaneously. Users can drag different live feeds to any location and size. For example, you might have a giant “screen” in front of you with the main image of the race, mini-screens showing cockpit footage of the three race leaders below, with a 3D map of the track on one side and a statistics window on the other.

This amazing application is demonstrated in the video below, showing its use on site in the user’s home:

The video is an astonishing demonstration of the processing power of 3D Vision Pro. For example, you can watch a live helicopter view on a 3D track map with icons showing where each driver is currently in the race. You can even pin live video from the driver’s cockpit to the driver’s car as it moves around the track, meaning you can watch each corner as it approaches on the map.

At one point in the video, the user has eight different live video sources running simultaneously, three of which are moving around a 3D map, and the Vision Pro shows no visible signs of stuttering.

According to a recent update on the Lapz website, the 3D map has recently been updated with new particle effects that “follow the car, charting the driver’s path on the track for a short period of time.” “When the driver activates the drag reduction system, the particles enlarge and turn green.”

The only limitation seems to be that the user cannot run the virtual background and the 3D track map at the same time, but this seems to be a very minor inconvenience.

A new way to watch F1

The Lapz app is delivering on the promise made last year by F1 consultant and former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley.

He said at the time that F1 was working to develop augmented reality applications that would “make anyone a race engineer.”

“You can imagine working really well in augmented reality,” he said at the time. “I’m watching Max Verstappen but I want to push it further and I want to see how quickly Lewis (Hamilton) catches him. How do Max and Checo (Sergio Pérez) compare? Let’s take a look at how their speeds compare over the last few laps and compare the last few laps in terms of average lap time.

“This is incredibly powerful,” Smedley added. “Then you make everyone a race engineer, you make everyone a team coach. It’s great technology.”

Testing the Lapz application

The Lapz app is currently in beta testing and potential users will need to join Apple’s TestFlight system to download the app to their Vision Pro.

Users also need a paid F1TV Pro subscription to watch races using the Vision Pro headset. The service offers not only live coverage of races, but also replays of previous Grand Prix.

The app’s creators claim that “Lapz will continue to be as free as Wi-Fi at a coffee shop, as long as we can afford to pay our electricity bills.” However, they are asking for donations through the Lapz website.
