A renewable energy project at a landfill in Lebanon is coming to an end

LEBANON, NH (WCAX) – An Upper Valley renewable energy project that converts trash into electricity will soon come online.

The project at the Lebanon landfill includes five microturbines that will produce approximately 1 megawatt of energy from methane currently burned at the facility. Methane is a natural by-product of solid waste.

A national network study has delayed the start of construction, but city officials say it is almost complete.

“We already have all the microturbines and other equipment in place, so we’re just working on the above-ground lines, which we should have in service by the end of the year,” said Erica Douglas of the Lebanon Solid Waste Facility.

It’s a $6 million project that city officials say will pay for itself over time through revenue generated from sending power back to the grid.

As part of the project, an on-site charging station is also being built, which can be used in the event of long-term power outages.
