The new Oura Ring Gen 4 focuses on high accuracy

The Oura Ring 4 was unveiled – with many improvements to accuracy, although fewer changes to size and design.

Oura Ring Gen 4 is now official and brings huge improvements in design and applications as the smart ring market grows.

With the Samsung Galaxy Ring, RingConn 2, and Ultrahuman Ring Air pushing Oura in terms of new features – Oura has responded with a major update.

The new Oura Ring 4 is thinner and lighter. The design is closer to the Oura Ring Gen 3 Horizon and features a fully smooth design that is slimmer and slimmer than the existing Heritage. It starts at $299 with the same requirements for the $5.99 monthly subscription.

Improved accuracy

Oura Gen 4 vs. Gen 3Oura Gen 4 vs. Gen 3

But Gen 4 has 18 signal paths, compared to just 8 in Gen 3. Oura places high demands on accuracy and claims its new Smart Sensing platform means a 10-20% increase in SpO2 sensor signal quality. making it 30% more accurate.

Oura Gen 3 users may notice gaps in their data due to the ring rotating at night. Oura claims the new platform delivers 30% fewer interruptions in sleep monitoring and 7% fewer daytime monitoring.

The new Oura Smart Sensing platform also uses new technology exclusively revealed by Safe for use earlier this year, which analyzes the signal quality of its sensors and adapts them to finger anatomy, BMI and skin tone. This should mean greater accuracy for people of color, which is a huge step forward.

Battery life has also improved, up to 8 days from 7 days on Gen 3. This is thanks in part to the Smart Sensing platform, which dynamically selects sensors that will get the best signal.

Changes to the application

The Oura app has also undergone a major overhaul and now includes dedicated screens for both daily and long-term data.

The new Today tab puts short-term data like activity, stress and readiness in an easy-to-read format and prioritizes data that users prefer to see.

The Metrics window will show you an overview of your health metrics and how they compare to known baselines, and provide a snapshot of your current health status.

The new My Health tab takes a broader view and shows trends in health and habits, revealing where users may be improving or deteriorating. We’re big supporters of this type of data view at Wareable, and it’s good to see Oura taking a step forward in presenting people with long-term health data without having to manually filter data.

New features

Auto activity detection is available for 40 different workout types, and users can get training data and cardio performance analysis.

It also improves stress tracking and adds context as to why stress levels may be showing as high – including exercise and movement, which in turn helps show where stress may be coming from throughout the day.

Finally, Oura is introducing its own Fertile Window feature in women’s health monitoring, which uses sensors on the ring to determine when is the best time to try to conceive.
