Mobile games make up a large part of the iOS and Google Play app stores, generating more than half of all app revenues and about a third of all published apps.

As the largest segment of the mobile app industry, it’s no surprise that many of the techniques used to keep users engaged and enjoying their apps come from the world of gaming. Many of the most popular apps “gamify” teaching, shopping, and other app categories by adopting features such as bonuses, lives, and reward games.

Even after implementing all these features and developing new ones, most downloaded mobile games will be uninstalled or left dormant after 30 days.

While some mobile game developers have better luck due to the stickiness of their product, on average over 95 percent of installers will be abandoned within 30 days on both iOS and Google Play.

To avoid this, mobile games need to develop the habit of returning in players. The easiest way to do this is in multiplayer games by offering daily or weekly challenges along with notifications when friends are playing. In single-player games, the player regularly has trouble breaking a high score or obtaining a new consumable item.
