Google launches open-source artificial intelligence platform to boost India’s digital growth

Google is taking an important step in improving India’s digital landscape with the launch of its open-source AI Agent Framework, powered by the Gemini AI model.

Announced at the Google for India 2024 event, this initiative aims to connect India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) with advanced artificial intelligence technology, which has the potential to create a major impact across sectors.

Introducing the Gemini agent community

The new AI Agent Framework is said to offer a single platform where users can find products, services and information from a variety of vendors, no matter which application or network they use. Whether you’re looking for electronics, agricultural supplies, educational courses or job opportunities, you’ll find what you need with this framework.

Key features include support for multiple Indian languages and voice interactions, making it accessible to all users. The framework will initially focus on two important sectors: agriculture and skills.

Farmers can use the platform to obtain essential information on weather, seeds, harvest dates, market prices and access to credit, helping them work more efficiently and increase productivity.

The framework will help users find suitable courses and job opportunities. Google has partnered with Glance, an Indian artificial intelligence company, to bring the agent to India’s 235 million Android users and provide young people with the skills needed in today’s job market.

Google is also focusing on data security, especially in sensitive areas such as healthcare and finance. Earlier this year, Google Cloud started enabling organizations to store data in India to meet local requirements.

Later this year, companies will be able to store data and run machine learning processes for Google’s advanced model, Gemini 1.5 Flash, all in India. This provides greater control and security for organizations using Google AI technology.

DPI in the box

India’s innovative approach to DPI has become a model for other countries. To share this success, Google has partnered with the EkStep Foundation to launch “DPI in a Box.” This project will offer a ready-to-use model based on key components of Indian DPI, including:

Open networks: Enabling different platforms to work together seamlessly.

Digital Identity: Using India’s Digital Identity System for Secure Authentication.

Digital public goods: Sharing best practices and insights from traveling around India.

By providing these tools, Google aims to help other countries build their own digital infrastructure and enjoy similar benefits to India.
