Gemini extensions will help Google’s artificial intelligence take control of your Android phone

Google has promised that Gemini’s artificial intelligence will not be a mere chatbot replacement for Google Assistant. We will see in the coming weeks whether this commitment will be implemented. Gemini extensions will enable AI to give users access to more Google apps, not just Gmail or YouTube. If it works as expected, it could be the first true AI integration between phones.

In a blog post, Google provided an approximate time frame in which we will be able to integrate Gemini with various Workspace applications such as Google Keep, Google Calendar, Tasks, and Tools. Currently, Gemini can work with Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. The general idea is that upon user request, the AI will be able to drag information from one app to another without having to scroll through the app to find the information you’re looking for.

For example, the Mountain View tech giant said users should be able to download a recipe from Gmail and then add ingredients to a note in Keep. It will also work with the phone’s camera, and if users take a photo of a receipt or concert ticket, they should be able to set it as an event or reminder in Calendar.

These features should be rolling out in the next few weeks, so we shouldn’t have to wait too long before we try out Google’s geminification of our phones for ourselves. The Gemini app has already taken over most of the current Assistant duties, and earlier this week Google made it available to every Android phone access to Gemini Live. Thanks to this feature, you can talk to your phone in a more natural way than with the basic Gemini, which is still better at keeping commands short and sweet.

Google has unveiled some of these features in full release August presentation, disclosure new Pixel 9 series along new watches AND Pixel buds. Apple promised very similar possibilities with Apple’s intelligence still flowing in. So far, we haven’t had the opportunity to test either company’s full mobile AI integrations. The idea seems like a reasonable one, but knowing how finicky and inconsistent AI can be, we’re not holding our breath when it comes to truly changing the mobile ecosystem.

I may be of much less use to conversational AI than to an assistant that can root out important emails from my flooded inbox. Google on Wednesday he said The update affected the “Summary Cards” and “Events Coming Soon” features in Gmail. The coming soon event should include the latest updates, such as deliveries or events, based on your emails.

Summary cards now display more information at the top of each email regarding purchases, events, receipts and travel registrations. You can add events to your calendar just like before. But now you can also modify your bookings or get directions to the airport or venue.

Google says Gemini will eventually have access to more than 40 non-English languages. First on the list are French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Hindi. The rest will come sometime in the future. Gemini Live supports calls in up to two languages simultaneously on each phone. Now even more people will be able to see their Android phone transform into an AI device. Cross-platform mobile AI seems tempting, especially for those of us with too many things to remember where the hell we put that one event registration email. However, for those who prefer their phones to be AI-free and still receive new features, you may have to bite the Gemini bullet.
