One NFL personnel executive offered a withering assessment of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 0-4 offense at the start of the 2024 NFL season.

“They play up front like they can’t wait for the game to end. It’s hard to watch,” the official told Mike Sando of The Athletic. “The quarterback misses easy throws. Has inappropriate body language. Overall, offensively, they are a downtrodden group.”

These comments came before Jacksonville lost 24-20 to the Houston Texans in week four. The Jags finished with 313 yards rushing, with Trevor Lawrence going 18 of 33 for 169 yards and two touchdowns.

Even if the offense performed better, it might not matter much. The defense is allowing the third-most yards (380.0) and points (27.3) per game, and the team ranks last in DVOA (Defense-Adjusted Value Above Average) according to FTN Fantasy.

Still, the state of the Jaguars’ offense is misleading considering how much the franchise has invested in that side of the field.

Jacksonville hired a head coach (Doug Pederson) who had worked as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator earlier in his career. Lawrence, defenseman Travis Etienne Jr. and winger Brian Thomas Jr. they were first-round picks and Lawrence had just signed a $275 million extension. Both Wideout Christian Kirk and Tight End Evan Engram signed relatively large contracts for their positions.

In short, the Jags shouldn’t be playing this average offensively.

Let’s talk about the Jaguars’ offense yesterday. If you’re looking for someone to blame, the answer is yes. There are just so many frustrating moments here. In a game they had to win to save the season and the Texans gifted them an early TD, it was brutal.

A problem can be both simple and difficult to solve.

Lawrence was a Pro Bowler in his second season, which was Pederson’s first year at the helm. It looked like he was on his way to becoming a franchise quarterback and had a coach who could get him there.

Instead, the 24-year-old has yet to make a major breakthrough and his condition is currently deteriorating significantly. He threw for 729 yards, four touchdowns and an interception while completing just 53.3% of his passes.

“They have a point guard who they think is a superstar and he is not,” one source told Sando. “The owners think he is a superstar. This won’t end well.”

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold were rejected by multiple teams before things finally went well in their careers. It’s too early to write Lawrence off completely.

However, this season is on track to raise some serious questions about the Jaguars’ future health.
