New Jersey scooter accident: Paterson lawmakers and community call for tighter regulations on electric bikes and scooters after fatal crash

PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) — Lawmakers and the community of Paterson, New Jersey, are calling for stricter regulations on electric bikes and scooters on Thursday.

Calls for action came after Angelvl Javier-Reynos and Brailin Dominguez were hit by a vehicle while riding a scooter on Madison Avenue. Both teenagers were 18 years old.

The video shows that the driver apparently obeyed all traffic regulations, but never saw the scooter coming towards him.

The impact was so powerful that one of the teenagers fell off his scooter and flew into the air.

The owner of the company, John Mitchell, told an eyewitness that scooters often break traffic laws on the street and that the accident did not surprise him.

“On a daily basis, this is the main artery of Madison Avenue, especially during rush hour,” he said. “There are a lot of illegal vehicles flying through the streets. I don’t respect any cars or regulations. It’s almost like a challenge for them.”

Councilman Luis Velez pushed for more regulations to combat scooters in Paterson.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident.
