Officials say man arrested after shooting at lawmakers in Buncombe County

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been arrested after a shooting that occurred during a wellness check Thursday.

Deputies were called to a residence on Pisgah View Road. According to the sheriff’s office, as they approached the area, four shots were fired and officers had to take cover.

The Buncombe County Special Response Team and crisis negotiators were then called to the scene. After brief negotiations, the suspect, 64-year-old Douglas Bruce Wells, surrendered.

Wells is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault on a public servant and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

He is currently being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center.
