Impact of Diwali sales on the Indian technology market

Over the past few years, e-commerce giants have seen significant growth during Diwali. Online shopping, which currently accounts for 61% of total sales during Diwali, has seen a surge in demand in both metro cities, tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

Smaller cities accounted for 60% of all online transactions, reflecting the increase in the use of digital solutions. This growth can be attributed to factors such as affordable data plans, better digital payment options and rising smartphone penetration.

Technology products remained the most popular category, contributing to record sales. Amazon’s ‘Great Indian Festival’ and Flipkart’s ‘Great Billion Days’ campaigns witnessed a surge in demand for smartphones, laptops, tablets and other gadgets.

Both platforms launched over 25,000 new products and offered discounts of up to 80%. As a result, smartphone sales alone saw an impressive 50% growth on Flipkart and a staggering 200% growth on Amazon. The introduction of new smartphone models with advanced features such as 5G and AI-enabled cameras has further increased consumer interest.
