Matty Matheson’s The Bear’s Italian Beef Sandwiches are coming to Detroit

Downtown Detroit cocktail bar Standby and Matty Matheson, restaurateur, star and executive producer of the hit Hulu TV show “The Bear,” are relaunching Detroit City Beef at Skip, Standby’s nearby sister bar at 1234 Library St., on Detroit’s Belt Alley.

Thanks to this food cart partnership, Matheson will be able to order a hot Italian beef sandwich (a favorite in Chicago) and a vegetarian fried eggplant sandwich through the end of October.

The launch on Sunday is the next step in the partnership between Standby and Matheson.

According to a press release, Skip’s food cart is from Chicago and has been refurbished. It will serve Matheson’s Beef Sandwiches for $15 each, which include beef chuck cooked in jus, a soft Italian roll, mild or hot giardiniera and beef dipping sauce. Eggplant Sammy is a vegetarian option with fried eggplant with red sauce and mozzarella. You can season it with giardiniera or add sweetness with roasted peppers.

In July, Matheson and Standby announced their partnership. Matheson, who plays Neil Fak in “The Bear,” has curated a new menu for Standby that pairs well with craft cocktails. The menu includes dishes such as coconut shrimp and Jerk mayonnaise, mortadella sliders and grilled Alabama BBQ wings. In addition to serving as executive producer of Hulu’s “The Bear,” Matheson, a Canadian native, is also an internationally recognized chef, restaurateur and best-selling author. He is also behind several brands under Matheson Food Co. According to the press release, the collaboration with Standby is Matheson’s first project in the US.

Look for The Skip to also host Matheson on his upcoming book tour. On November 26 at 5 p.m., Matheson will be at The Skip celebrating his new book, “Soup, Salads, Sandwiches.” Tickets for the meet and greet, which includes a signed copy of the book and a Detroit City Beef sandwich, are $65 per person. Tickets can be found at resy.com.
