The West Virginia PSC publishes its rules and regulations regarding fire hydrants for public comment

CHARLESTON, W.Va.– The West Virginia Public Utilities Commission released a 72-page document Thursday highlighting its proposed standard regulatory rules for fire hydrants.

They made the document available to the public and other interested parties to leave comments for the PSC to consider.

These rules were introduced by the PSC in June 2023 in connection with an investigation initiated by the Commission to maintain an inventory of the state’s 50,000 fire hydrants as it wanted to ensure they were functioning properly.

The Commission reported the results of its investigation to the Legislature, which resulted in the passage of a law that took effect this year that placed all fire hydrants under the Commission’s management. This prompted the commission to issue rules and regulations to ensure that state fire hydrant laws were consistent with national standards.

The commission formed a task force that included many parties interested in fire hydrant maintenance. It was the task force that prepared the document and it was made available to the public for review.

The Commission gives the public until November 6 at 4:00 p.m. to present preliminary comments, and comments can be submitted until December 6, at 16:00

They may submit their comments to the Secertary Executive, Public Service Commission of West Virginia, PO Box 812, Charleston, WV 25323 and ensure that they cite General Order 188.52, or they may visit the Commission’s website at www.psc.state. wv.us, where they click Submit a Comment, then Formal Comment and follow the instructions.

The document can be found on the Commission’s website.
