A CBI lawyer told the court that the investigation into the rape and murder case and alleged financial irregularities had been handed over to the central agency by the Calcutta High Court. Referring to the SC’s August 30 order, he said the apex court had also asked him to probe whether the two cases were related or whether there was a connection between them. On Friday, the agency also raised suspicion of “inciting Sanjay Roy to commit gruesome rape and murder.”
The CBI also said it was also probing a larger conspiracy in which Ghosh and former Tala police superintendent Abhijit Mandal may have tried to cover up the incident.
On Friday, the court said that if the allegations are confirmed, the act will be considered the rarest of rare cases. “There is an allegation of obliteration of evidence related to the alleged crime, which has multiplied the area and volume of the investigation to gather evidence. The CBI should leave no stone unturned to prove its allegations,” the court said on Friday.
Mandal’s lawyer Ayan Bhattacharya said he should be granted bail as the charges were not only of a bailable nature but also flouted the provision of Art. 42 BNSS (protection of members of the armed forces from arrest).
