Google has officially started rolling out advanced anti-theft features for devices running Android 10 or later, helping keep users safer from phone theft. First announced at I/O 2024, these new features will be made available via Google Play Services and are intended to protect your personal information if your phone is stolen.

Anti-theft page: new security center

Users can access the new Theft Protection settings by searching for “Anti-Theft” in the Settings app or by navigating to Google Services > All Services > Personal & Device Security. This page describes the built-in security features designed to protect your data in the event of theft.

Key theft detection features

The update includes three main features:

Theft Detection Lock: This feature uses sensors, Wi-Fi and smart device connections to determine if someone suddenly takes your unlocked phone while you’re using it. If such activity is detected, the phone will be automatically locked, preventing unauthorized access to personal data.

Offline device lock: Designed to protect your device even when it’s disconnected from the internet. If a thief turns off Wi-Fi or mobile data to stop location tracking, the device will be locked automatically.

However, this function is activated under two conditions:

  1. You must actively use your phone when it is unlocked.
  2. You can lock the screen up to twice a day.

Remote Lock: If your phone is stolen, you can visit android.com/lock to remotely lock your device. This feature allows you to enter your phone number and challenge your security for quick action. Google believes this method is faster than using Find My Device.

Global deployment and availability

Google initially tested these anti-theft features in Brazil in June 2024. Now, Android users around the world, including Pixel and Samsung device users, are starting to see these features. Currently, users registered for the Google Play Services beta (version 24.40.33) in the US have access to all three theft detection features, with the full version expected to be available soon.

These security features reflect Google’s commitment to protecting user data and preventing unauthorized access, especially in high-risk situations.
