Cosatu will embark on a nationwide march against low wages

Cosatu, which represents more than 1.8 million workers, said the protest would highlight issues such as unemployment, crime and the rising cost of living.

A spokesman for Saccawu, a Cosatu subsidiary, Sithembele Tshwete, said the call was particularly relevant in the retail, hospitality and food processing sectors where workers were paid less than the minimum wage.

“The sector is well known for, among other things, increased job insecurity, sick leave, staff cuts, ongoing job losses due to restructuring and the collapse of trade unions.

“Saccawu, together with progressive civil society formations, demands an end to the brazen actions of workers. We also demand that other companies in the retail sector introduce a moratorium on staff cuts. We demand decent work for all workers in the retail, hospitality and trade sectors.”

The strike is expected to take place in a number of locations across the country, including the JSE, SA Reserve Bank offices and Parliament.
