Unlicensed “dental veneer technicians” are putting people’s health at risk

Dentists warn against a dangerous trend: veneers are being installed by unlicensed, untrained people who often promote themselves on social media. These “veneer technologists” offer cheap veneers, but the treatments can cause serious problems such as pain, nerve damage and tooth loss.

Dental veneers are popular because they can improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped or broken, discolored, crooked or misshapen.

These are custom-made, natural-looking dental overlays made of high-quality dental material. They differ from crowns in that they only cover the front surface of the tooth and not the entire tooth structure.

Treatment is not reversible, so it is important to see a licensed dentist for veneer installation.

Why are “veneer technologies” so popular?

  • High cost of veneers: Traditional veneers are expensive, typically costing $1,000-$2,000 per tooth.
  • Social media promotion: Unlicensed vendors use platforms like Instagram and TikTok to advertise low prices and attract customers.

The procedure involves very real risks, which include:

  • Pain and nerve damage: Procedures performed without proper anesthesia and training can be extremely painful and cause permanent damage.
  • Infection and tooth loss: Unsanitary conditions and lack of proper dental examinations can lead to infection and tooth loss.

“As dentists, our mission is to provide high-quality care that promotes oral and overall health, and to build trust among the patients we humbly serve in our communities,” said American Dental Association President Linda J. Edgar, DDS “Dental Procedures , which are considered irreversible, should only be performed by licensed, trained dentists. The public should be especially wary of these alleged offers.”

What to do

  • Visit a Licensed Dentist: Always make sure your provider is a licensed dentist with the appropriate qualifications.
  • Beware of low prices: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Check references: Verify the dentist’s license and look for reviews online.

The ADA has updated its MouthHealthy.org website on veneers to inform patients how patients can verify that their providers are licensed to provide dental services in their state.

Remember: Veneers are a medical procedure. Don’t risk your health by going to an unqualified person.

“Any dental procedure that can change the physical structure of the teeth, gums or jaws, without the supervision of a dentist, may cause irreversible harm,” the ADA said in a statement on its website.
