ICYMI: Russia’s envoy to the US ends his term amid bilateral unrest

Russia’s envoy to the U.S., a Kremlin hardliner, has returned to Moscow, state media reported, and the end of his term comes amid the most hostile relations between the two nations in decades.

“Russian ambassador to the US Anatoly Ivanovich Antonov ends his mission in Washington and goes to Moscow,” state news agency TASS reported, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Siberian-born Antonov, 69, and a career diplomat, was seen as a hawk who was still able to reach compromises. The head of the Russian mission in Washington since 2017 announced in July that his assignment was coming to an end.

There was no question of who would replace the MP, considered a military-style negotiator. His stance on Russia’s war in Ukraine showed strong support for President Vladimir Putin’s actions.
