Freely TV streaming will be available on Amazon Fire TVs – but unfortunately not on Fire TV Sticks

Freely, the UK’s new free TV streaming service, has announced a deal with Amazon that will see the service roll out to the company’s Fire TV software this fall, meaning it will be available on Amazon’s own Fire TVs, as well as on other platforms. Amazon-enabled smart TVs. This means everything from super-budget models to elite OLED displays will be included.

This is good news. The bad news is that this doesn’t affect Amazon Fire TV Stick add-on devices – only TVs with Fire TV features built-in.

If you’re not familiar with Freely yet, it’s a sort of iPlayer for everything: a free service from key UK broadcasters that’s free to use and blurs the lines between live and on-demand viewing. It’s not a replacement for Freeview or Freesat, but an alternative option for those who prefer to receive TV via broadband – a sort of Freeview in the age of Wi-Fi.

Launching free-to-air in April 2024 with support from leading UK broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Channel 5.

Which Amazon TVs will they get for free?

Let’s start with Amazon’s models. There are Amazon Fire TV Series 2 and 4, as well as Amazon Fire TV Omni and Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED, all of which support the Freely app – with the latter of which we rate as one of the best TVs if you’re on a budget.

The solution will also be available on 2024 TCL 4K Smart TVs with Fire TV (models 43PF650K, 50PF650K, 55PF650K and 65PF650K) and on Panasonic Smart TVs with Fire OS. This latest deal means Freely will be available on premium OLED screens, and the Panasonic Z95A will offer Fire TV on a truly elite TV.

Freely will also become your primary TV guide on Amazon Fire TV smart TVs and on smart TVs running the Fire OS operating system – so the streaming option will be integrated with your broadcast options if you connect it to an antenna.

In addition to Fire TV devices, Freely is also available on Hisense’s Vidaa TVs, Bush’s Tivo TVs, and Panasonic’s Tivo TVs. You can expect more offerings in the near future: the makers of Freely Every TV say they’re “working with both manufacturers and operating system providers” to make the service available to more TVs.
