Facial recognition software helps in break-ins and assaults at Texas A&M

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A College Station man was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges including burglary and aggravated assault. Prosecutors attribute his arrest to facial recognition software.

Prosecutors with the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office said that on April 14, 2024, 21-year-old Christian Young followed unsuspecting students into a Texas A&M dormitory, entering the building by grabbing the door before it closed.

According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, Young entered the student’s room and threatened her with scissors. The survivor of the attack was able to fight off the attack and Young fled the scene, but before doing so, he took money from the survivor and her roommates.

The suspect was captured on video entering the building and the image was sent to area agencies. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office ran the photo through facial recognition software and was able to identify Young.

Young also wore a hat from the fast food restaurant where he worked at the time of the crime. Restaurant management identified Young and his time sheets matched the schedule.

According to reports, he was arrested and confessed to the police.

The victim woke up from a nightmare but responded bravely”said Assistant District Attorney Kevin Capps in the release. “We all have the right to be safe in our homes, and certainly when sleeping in our beds. Christian Young has destroyed that security and is not going to prison where he belongs.
