The Grizzlies’ Zach Edey practices threes in training camp footage

Standing at 6-foot-7 and with one of the most accomplished academic resumes in history, Zach Edey is one of the most recognizable rookies in the NBA right now.

He was drafted No. 9 overall and will play a huge role for the Grizzlies this season in helping them get back into contention in the Western Conference.

In a video posted by Action News 5’s Matt Infield, Edey can be seen hitting three after three from the corner at Grizzlies training camp:

As Infield’s caption says, skills demonstrated in a non-competitive environment should be taken with a pinch of salt. But there are some noteworthy conclusions to be drawn from the clip.

First, Edey has been seen shooting long shots in other, non-competitive conditions, and just like in the recently released video, his mechanics are much better than many might think. The Canadian also has more touch than is often given credit for, scoring 6 of 7 points on film.

Being able to score triples would be monumental for both his game and the entire Grizzlies team, creating more space and adding another level of versatility to his already potent offense.

Edey may not be ready for such a long stretch, but the video may at least indicate the staff’s willingness to allow him to experiment with shorter jumpers sooner.

The numbers on paper are not in Edey’s favor. In 138 games with the Boilermakers, Edey hit two three-pointers, making one of them for an impressive career percentage of 50%. Joking aside, it wasn’t important for the center.

Time will tell if Edey is truly ready to expand to the perimeter. Perhaps we’ll find out on Monday, October 7, during the preseason opener in Memphis against the Dallas Mavericks.
