Indian diaspora calls for resolution amid India-Canada diplomatic standoff – ThePrint – ANIFeed

Ontario (Canada), October 15 (ANI): Members of the Indian diaspora in Canada have expressed concerns over the deteriorating ties between India and Canada. They called for a peaceful resolution of the issue. This comes amid a diplomatic standoff on Monday in which India expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled the Indian envoy to Canada.

Speaking exclusively to ANI, prominent Canadian businessman, politician and social activist Baljit Singh Bawa called it “disheartening news” and said the turn of events was due to “politically motivated statements » made because of “someone’s personal ego or by fostering a community.”

He said growing tensions between the two countries are a serious problem that makes him “very concerned about my future and that of all Indian Canadians on this earth.”

He stressed that “Canada and India must work together to ensure these relations strengthen.”

Commenting on India’s economic prowess and the fact that the country ranks third in the world in terms of GDP, he said it becomes imperative for Canada and India to maintain good relations.

Indo-Canadian host Darshan Maharaja, speaking to ANI, said it was “sad news” that relations between India and Canada were deteriorating. Noting that Canada is home to a significant number of Indo-Canadians, he noted that the standoff would impact citizens and even trade relations of the two countries.

Maharaja suggested the intervention of a “friendly third country” between India and Canada to help resolve issues between the two nations.

With nearly 1.8 million diasporas and 1 million non-resident Indians, Canada hosts one of the largest overseas Indian diasporas, representing more than 3% of its total population.

In 2023, the recorded bilateral merchandise trade between India and Canada stood at US$7.65 billion.

India and Canada are facing an unprecedented diplomatic crisis after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that Indian government agents were involved in Nijjar’s killing in Canada.

India has rejected Canada’s allegations, calling them “absurd” and “politically motivated.”

On Monday, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials as part of an investigation into the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023. India also announced its decision to expel six Canadian diplomats. (ANI)
