Lifeguards protest for better regulations and safety on Catalan beaches

Rescuers from all over Catalonia gathered in Barcelona on Wednesday protest relative to their current working conditions.

They are calling Catalan government regulate your work to ensure safety Catalan beaches. To make their voices heard, they gathered in front of the director’s office in Plaça Sant Jaume in the city center, where there were high chairs and ring buoys.

They ask for longer working season, from May to October, and the obligation for city councils to adhere to certain common minimum standards. A demand similar to last year’s, prompting beach lifeguards in Barcelona to go on strike.

“There were over a thousand rescue operations last year performed along the Catalan coast. This is work we do every day that is unfortunately not appreciated, and we are here today because we can no longer tolerate it,” Nacho Ibañez, one of the protesting rescuers, told the media.

Some of their requests also include better chairs, as most are just wooden raised chairs with no sun protection.

Rescuers took to the streets to remind the authorities that it was them saving people from drowning.

Their demands are consistent with the legislation in Balearic Islands and Canary Islands.
